2021 Free Online Summer Camp Instructors and Course Details

Heredity/Genetics

This course is an introduction to the basics of heredity and genetics, such as Mendel's laws, DNA and its processes, pedigrees, karyotypes, etc. We will cover some of the important concepts detailed in the Heredity event from Science Olympiad (Division B). No prior experience is necessary.

Instructor: Brenda Mao

Brenda is a rising freshman at Troy High School in Troy, Michigan with a great interest in science and literature. She has taken part in both various math competitions and Science Olympiad. Brenda is also an avid pianist; she has performed at Carnegie Hall and recently won first place in the preliminary round of the Conero International Piano Competition. Besides competing, Brenda is a tutor on schoolhouse.world, and likes working with others. In her free time, she enjoys reading, playing the piano and violin, listening to musical soundtracks, and spending time with friends.

Geography

This course will provide an introduction to geography. This is not a course for memorizing countries and capitals, but rather a look at the physical traits of Earth and an analysis of how they affect the human world. Each week we will examine a region of the earth, using the 5 themes of geography to help us analyze it. Prior geography knowledge will be helpful, but not required.

Instructor: Tanya Wu

Tanya is a rising freshman at DuPont Manual High School in Louisville, Kentucky. She has competed in many geography competitions. She is a National Geographic 2x state qualifier, and has qualified for the International Geography Bee. She also competes in math and science competitions, while being an avid quizbowl player. Outside of competitions, she enjoys playing piano, cubing, and sports.

Forensics

This course will go over the basics of forensics science and crime solving. We will go over the basics of fingerprint ID and collection, bloodstain analysis, and other topics. Each class will include going over background information, going deeper into the topics, and plenty of practice problems and discussions.

Instructor: Yiming Zhu

Yiming will be an 8th grader in the 2021-2022 school year at Beckendorff Junior High. She is a forensics enthusiast who has won numerous medals in Science Olympiad including placing 5th nationally in crime busters. Other than forensics, she also likes to learn about biology. In her free time she likes to watch cooking shows and paint.

Greek/Roman Mythology

This course will be an introduction to Greek and Roman mythology. Throughout the 4 sessions, we will talk about the main gods and heroes from these cultures. The class will also explore the myths and legends associated with each of them and will also enrich your personal knowledge by unraveling how the ancient Greeks and Romans explained some of our world's most intriguing natural phenomenon. 

Instructor: Amanda Guo

Amanda Guo is a senior at Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf in Montreal, Quebec. She is passionate about science, Latin and French and is part of her school's fencing team. In her free time she likes to read, to paint and to listen to music.

Caden Wang is a student at Beckendorff Junior High in Katy, Texas. He is currently in the Math and Science Team (MST) and is a new member of Beckendorff Junior High's Science Olympiad Team. He really loves learning about animals and is looking forward to meeting all the people who turn up for his classes.

Vishal is a rising freshman at Seven Lakes High School in Katy, Texas, and will be one of the teachers this summer. He is very passionate about Anatomy and Physiology, Neuroscience, and Biology, as well as public speaking and debate. He is a 3x national medalist, a Science Olympiad National MySO champion(In Anatomy and Physiology), and a captain for his Science Olympiad team. He is extremely excited to help teach at Kid Teach Kid. In his free time he watches basketball, plays ping-pong, and listens to music.
